Transport

  • Outbound ✓ booked €39 — Berlin Hbf 23:28 → Mayrhofen 10:29 · car 24, seat 51
    ICE 905 → München 07:15/07:23 — only 8 min, Gl 15 → Gl 12 → RJ 81 → Wörgl 08:44 (27 min) → IR 612 → Jenbach 09:24 (15 min) → R 131 → Mayrhofen
  • If the München connection is missed — Zugbindung is lifted automatically; take the next RJ/EC, or regional via Rosenheim–Kufstein. Arriving Mayrhofen by 12:00 still makes Gamshütte comfortably. Call the hut: +43 676 3437741
  • To trailhead — Bus 4104 Mayrhofen ⇄ Finkenberg (frequent, ~10–15 min).
  • Valley lifeline — Bus 4102 Mayrhofen–Ginzling–Schlegeis Stausee · runs 30 May–4 Oct 2026 · ~hourly from ~08:15 · toll section fee 16+ between Breitlahner and Schlegeis.
  • Stilluptal escape — shuttle WL2 / valley taxi from Grüne-Wand-Hütte.
  • Ahornbahn — 13 Jun–27 Sep daily 07:30–17:00 every 15 min (then to 31 Oct from 08:30) · cuts 1,300 m of the final descent.
  • Return rail — Mayrhofen → Berlin; keep flexible or buy after descent. Hard deadline: back in Berlin by 10 Aug 2026.

Go / No-Go rules

  • Stage 2 (11–12 h) — the hardest day; go only on a stable forecast, alpine start 06:00. Plan B: descend Gamshütte→Ginzling ~2 h → Bus 4102 → Schlegeis, walk to Dominikushütte. Same bed, half the day. Check the 4102 timetable the evening before.
  • Stage 3 combined day (3,134 m) — cross Schönbichler Horn before midday, 07:00 start. Storm risk before Furtschaglhaus → wait there or turn back to Schlegeis. Bad forecast from the start → Plan B valley route: Bus 4102 → Breitlahner → Zemmgrund → Berliner Hütte (T2, ~7 h, no pass). Decide at Dominikushütte the evening before.
  • Stage 7 (Königsetappe) — no escape, no water en route. Bad forecast ⇒ do not start; descend Stilluptal instead (Grüne-Wand → WL2/taxi).
  • Fresh snow above ~2,700 m — passes (Schönbichler, Mörchenscharte, Lapenscharte) become hazardous; ask each Hüttenwirt every evening.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms (Gewitter) are the default summer hazard — start early, be off ridges by early afternoon.

Distress signal — no phone signal

    • Call for help — 6 signals/min (whistle, torch, waving) · 1 min pause · repeat
    • Answer — 3 signals/min
    • Helicopter Y/N — both arms up = YES, need help · one arm up + one down = NO
    • 112 tip — no bars on your network? Dial 112 anyway, it hops to any available carrier. Flight mode between attempts saves battery.

Storm & cold — quick protocol

    • Thunderstorm — off ridges, summits and cable sections immediately; away from summit crosses and lone boulders; crouch on the pack, feet together; spread out if in a group
    • Fresh snow / fog on a pass — do not cross, return to the last hut; the Hüttenwirt's read overrides the plan
    • Hypothermia signs (stumbling, slurring, confusion) — stop, insulate, sugar + warm drink, call 140 early, do not push on
    • Injured & immobile — insulate from the ground first, then call; if no signal, distress signal + send the strongest walker to the nearest hut
